2021 Design Trends We’re Implementing into our New Home

We’ve officially said “good riddance” to 2020 and like everyone else, we are MORE than ready to start the new year with renewed energy and a fresh perspective! SO many top designers have come out and predicted the hottest design trends of 2021 and let me tell you - they are AHHmazing. From implementing dark wood tones and moody paint colors to diamond pattern flooring and arched entryways, the new year (and our homes) just got a whole lot cooler.

As many of you know, we are just about to begin the process of renovating our historic Evanston home (permits pending) and I thought it would be SO fun to show you guys which 2021 design trends we will be applying to our home! Scroll on through for lots of drool-worthy inspo and get the inside scoop on our renovation plans.

Dark Wood Tones

Lately, light and bleached wood has dominated the design world but now, the rich colors of mid to dark wood tones are popping up everywhere! I love the depth that dark wood adds to a room (not to mention the gorgeous wood grain details).

I’ve been spending a lot of time designing our kitchen and one of the ways I plan on implementing this trend is on our kitchen island! I have literally gone back and forth for weeks on island inspiration - our cabinets will be cream so did I want it painted cream to match the cabinets? maybe we should go the opposite way and paint it black? or MAYYBE we should bleach it to match our white oak floors?! (David was ready to just go ahead and paint the damn thing orange). I was so confused until I started seeing gorgeous dark stained islands like the one above and I KNEW it was exactly what our kitchen needed!

Arched Entryways

I am seeing arched entryways everywhere and lucky for us, we don’t have to do much to implement this trend because we already have them! If you check out the before tour of the house, you’ll see that most of the openings into different rooms are segmental arches which we plan to keep. We will also be adding an arched, vintage pocket-door leading into our mudroom (it’s going to be gorgeous)

Diamond Pattern Flooring

I am obsessed with this classic, timeless flooring "trend” that has popped in and out of the design spotlight for years! When we first bought the house I KNEW diamond pattern flooring NEEDED to be in the design plans, but the question was WHERE should it go?! At first, we were thinking the mudroom would be a good option but I had my heart set on actually using a different material in that space. With some thought, we finally decided the first floor powder room would be the perfect spot for it. Our powder bath will be small but mighty and the floor will prove it!

English-Inspired Kitchens

English- inspired kitchens are here to stay and I am SO glad because nothing tugs at my heartstrings more than a charming European cottage style kitchen. The key to achieving this style is mixing the old and the new while also using traditional organic materials. We plan on using a mix of aged brass, marble, and wood throughout our kitchen and taking a “furniture-like” approach to our cabinetry design as a nod to traditional English design.

Moody Paint Colors

If you follow me on instagram, you know I love light and bright as much as anybody BUT as my style and design preferences evolve I am starting to appreciate the effect of a good moody room. We plan on implementing this trend in our home office which will be painted a rich green (SW Rosemary).

What do you think of these design trends?! Any that you’re excited to see more of? Are there any you wish weren’t a thing? Let me know in the comments below!
